The great hormonal shift


Aging is an undeniable facet of life, ushering in an array of both internal and external changes that profoundly influence our overall well-being. For women, the aging process involves a notable decline in hormonal levels and a shift in metabolism. We as women must be able to navigate the aging journey, through the physiological transformations and we also must learn to be able to gracefully embrace this phase of life while maintaining vitality. (And our sanity!)

Here we go! 

  1. Puberty to Adulthood:

    Our journey starts with puberty, a phase when a we undergo significant hormonal shifts, including an increase in estrogen and progesterone. These hormones play pivotal roles in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the establishment of the menstrual cycle.

  2. Reproductive Years: 

    During our reproductive years, we experience regular menstrual cycles, hormonal fluctuations, and the ability to conceive. This stage is marked by hormonal balance, though it remains dynamic, with hormone levels varying from month to month.

  3. Perimenopause: 

    Typically beginning in the late 30s or early 40s, perimenopause serves as the transitional phase leading up to menopause. Hormones, particularly estrogen, start to fluctuate, resulting in irregular periods and various symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. We may start to feel irritable during this time and have more frequent episodes of PMS.


  4. Menopause: 

    Menopause signifies the end of a woman's reproductive years, typically occurring around age 50. Estrogen and progesterone levels decline significantly, leading to the cessation of menstruation. While symptoms may persist, they gradually diminish over time.


  5. Post menopause: 

    Post menopause follows menopause, with hormone levels remaining low and relatively stable. Many symptoms associated with perimenopause start to subside, but the long-term effects of low estrogen can impact bone and cardiovascular health. We live an estimated 1/3 of our lives in this stage. 

Unfortunately our metabolism is impacted.

  • As we age, our metabolic rate tends to slow down, resulting in the body burning fewer calories at rest and making weight management more challenging. The reduction in muscle mass further contributes to this metabolic slowdown.
  • Hormonal shifts and a slower metabolism may lead to changes in our body composition, including an increase in body fat and a decrease in lean muscle mass. These changes can affect our overall strength and mobility.
  • The decline in estrogen levels can result in decreased bone density, elevating the risk of osteoporosis. Maintaining bone health necessitates adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, combined with weight-bearing exercises.
As you can see, there is an intricate relationship between our  hormones and metabolism as we age. It covers the different life stages, from puberty to postmenopause, highlighting the hormonal changes and their physiological effects.
